Mouth Guards Prevent Teeth Grinding at Night

Mouth guards are very useful because they protect the teeth from damage. Damage can occur because of wear, injuries or other reasons. That is why more dentists are recommending them to their patients.

Protect your teeth with mouth guards

Mouth guards are coverings, usually made out of rubber or plastic composite, which people wear to protect their teeth. They are used by athletes and by people who grind their teeth in their sleep.

Types of dental mouth guards

The three most commonly used types of mouth guards are:

  • Stock mouth guards: As the name implies, these mouth guards are already preformed and ready to wear. They can be bought at most department stores or sporting goods stores and are inexpensive. Since they are already pre-formed, it is impossible to adjust the fit. They are also usually bulky, which makes it difficult to speak when they are in the mouth
  • Boil and bite mouth guards: Like the stock version, these can be bought at any sporting goods store or department store and they are also inexpensive. They provide better protection than the stock versions because they fit better in the mouth. They use thermoplastic material that softens when they are put in hot water, allowing the user to shape them around their teeth using their fingers
  • Customized mouth guards: These are custom-fitted for the patient in a dental office or at a lab based on their dentist’s specifications, making them the best type of dental mouth guards to get. The dentist will make an impression of the teeth, then mold a mouth guard over the impression. Since this requires the use of a special material and requires a lot of extra work, it is typically more expensive than the other types of mouth guards. However, the additional cost is worth it because it provides better comfort and protection than the other mouth guards

Do I need a dental mouth guard?

If someone has a tendency to grind their teeth in their sleep or frequently play physical sports, then they need a mouthguard. This will protect their teeth from getting worn down while they sleep and from getting knocked out or chipped while you play.

How much protection can I get from a dental mouth guard?

Some people are skeptical about using a mouth guard because they do not think it can offer them a lot of protection since it is made from plastic. Even though the mouth guard does not guarantee the teeth will not get worn down or knocked out, it will prevent the teeth from damaging the tongue, lips and other soft tissue in your mouth. It will also prevent your teeth from getting chipped.

Conclusion

Dental mouth guards can help prevent damage to your teeth if you grind your teeth while you sleep, which is why a lot of people use them. If you are thinking of getting a mouth guard, schedule an appointment with your dentist to get one customized for you.
