Popular Types of Teeth Straightening Treatments for Adults

Orthodontic treatment has evolved over the years; treatment has gone from unappealing metal bands and headgear to innovative teeth straightening options that are created to be less intrusive and as effective as possible to help patients live their lives with confidence. The major reason people give for wanting to straighten their teeth is to have a confident smile. However, orthodontic treatment does not just give you a better smile, it can also improve your bite, assist with dental hygiene, reduce tooth degradation and sometimes may be part of the treatment plan for sleep apnea. Refusing to treat issues with your teeth may seem easy, but the treatment to correct the problem may be easier than you thought.

Popular teeth straightening treatments

Ceramic braces

These are popular with adults and older teens who want a practical teeth straightening option that is less conspicuous. They are not as apparent as traditional metal braces because they have transparent tooth-colored brackets and sometimes, tooth-colored wires. Although ceramic braces are less noticeable, they are as effective as metal braces and can give similar results within the same time frame.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are completely hidden. They are custom-made braces connected to the back of the teeth instead of the front. Lingual braces are designed specifically to match the contours on the teeth to ensure that they are very comfortable and effective. However, due to the proximity of lingual braces to the tongue, they may take a while to get used to, and they may affect speech and eating more than conventional braces, which is one of the excuses people give for seeking alternative methods.

Clear aligners (such as Invisalign®)

Clear plastic aligners can offer a nearly invisible replacement for fixed braces but are usually more suitable for minor orthodontic issues. Clear aligners are detachable and almost invisible, but they have to been worn consistently to make the treatment effective.

Metal braces

The typical metal braces remain the most popular teeth straightening treatment for teens and kids, but adults can also use them, especially if they are on a tighter budget. With metal braces, tiny metal brackets are connected to the teeth and linked to each other with a thin wire, which is adjusted periodically or changed regularly to slowly shift the teeth and fix the misaligned bite. This makes metal braces the most effective teeth straightening method available.

The latest metal braces are smaller and more convenient than old metal braces. For younger patients, the braces are available in attractive elastic modules.

Teeth straightening without braces

Orthodontists also use a different method of teeth straightening described as removable appliances, usually known as plates. Removable plates are not an effective replacement for braces or aligners because their usage is highly limited. Often, when they are used, braces will be required later for a more permanent solution. There are multiple options available if you want to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. The best option is to contact your dentist to discuss the best teeth straightening treatment for your smile.
