Smile Makeover

Who Can Perform a Smile Makeover?

If you have several aesthetic concerns about your smile or you have issues with your teeth, you may be a good candidate for a smile makeover. A cosmetic dentist can perform many of the treatments associated with a smile makeover. Some treatments, such as crowns or teeth whitening, can be done by a general dentist. Read on to learn more about making over your smile.

Tooth color

There are several ways that tooth color can be corrected. Teeth may be discolored because of food, such as coffee, wine or soda. Smoking can also discolor the teeth. The good news is that there are several whitening options for teeth. For example, for severely discolored teeth, porcelain veneers are an option.

There are many shades of white for teeth. The dentist will work with the patient to select the right shade. This shade will be dependent on factors such as skin and hair color, as well as the patient’s age. The dentist can find the right balance between whiter teeth and a natural look.

Chipped teeth

Chips can be unsightly to the teeth. Chips can also cause the teeth to develop cavities. One way that a dentist may work to help fix chips is by applying porcelain veneers. This can help make the teeth look more like each other.

Missing teeth

Having one or more missing teeth negatively affects the patient’s smile, especially if the tooth is near the front of the mouth. Missing teeth can also cause the patient to be at a higher risk of tooth decay. One of the most popular options for replacing missing teeth is dental implants. The implant works as a root for the missing tooth while a crown is placed over the tooth. This can also prevent the patient from losing bone density in the jawbone from the missing tooth. Bridges and partial dentures are also options to replace missing teeth.

Spacing or alignment

If a patient did not have braces as a child, the patient might have crooked teeth. The teeth may also overlap or have gaps between them. The dentist can use orthodontics to help align the teeth if they are severely misaligned. Often, a dentist will recommend Invisalign because it is a subtle way to straighten the teeth.

If the teeth are only slightly out of alignment, the dentist may choose to use porcelain veneers to cover the teeth. They also have the added benefit of making the teeth look whiter. Veneers are very thin shells that cover the front of the teeth. They can change the length and the size of the teeth while better resisting stains on the teeth.
